Things I Wish I Knew in My First Year of QA

Looking back, my first year in QA was full of small wins, big learnings, and... a lot of confusion. I was figuring out tools, trying to understand domains, and half the time I wasn’t even sure if I was testing “right.” If you’re just starting out, here are a few things I wish someone had told me earlier.

Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes

One of the biggest things I learned was: you don’t have to know everything upfront. I used to panic every time I saw a tool I hadn’t used or a domain I didn’t understand. Now I know — learning never stops in QA.

Here are the things I really wish I knew in year one:

Understand the why behind testing – Don’t just run test cases, know what you're protecting.

Learn tools, but don’t let them overwhelm you – Start with the basics: Jira, TestRail, Postman.

Ask questions in sprint meetings – Don’t be shy. A small doubt today avoids a big bug tomorrow.

Exploratory testing is your superpower – Don’t always wait for formal test cases.

You’ll miss bugs. It’s okay. Learn and move on. Everyone does.

Your first year as a QA is about building confidence, not perfection. Trust your curiosity, and never stop improving.
